Meta-Analysis
Gel version of topical Adapalene used to treat mild to moderate acne. Differin gel works best on oily skin. It comes in a strength of 0.1% Adapalene in a 15 gm tube. It can be procured from OTCs or ordered online.
What is Differin Gel
Differin gel is the gel version of topical Adapalene used to treat acne formation of inflammatory and noninflammatory types. It belongs to the category of third-generation retinoids that permeate into the deep skin layers to treat and repair skin.
Clinical trials conducted over 900 patients using Differin gel have shown a better tolerability profile and quicker results.
How does it work on acne
Research has shown Adapalene, the active ingredient of Differin gel, to be a naphthoic acid derivative that is structurally more rigid than other retinoid generations. This decreases its ability to bind multiple retinoid receptors and reduces off-target effects, improving its tolerability and effectiveness. Being an active metabolite, it does not require conversions and directly attaches to the nucleus of dermal cells, specifically the RAR-beta and RAR-gamma proteins. Subsequently, the DNA binding induces gene transcription and downstream keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation.Â
Keratinocyte overproduction is the precursor for acne, and their downstream produces anti-inflammatory effects that exfoliate mature comedones and decrease microtome formation to heal acne lesions, prevent them from reappearing and promote clearer, healthier skin. Other than its antiproliferative effects, Adapalene even has antibacterial and neuroprotective properties.
Side Effects
Though safer than other retinoids like tretinoin, different gels can occasionally give rise to side effects, especially with a history of photosensitivity. Some of the chief side effects associated with Differin gel use are a tingling or mild burning sensation with itching and photosensitivity. Sometimes, the problems can be exacerbated in the form of swelling of the face, lips, tongue and eyelids. Inform your physician immediately if the problems suddenly increase in intensity and get urgent medical help.
Contraindications and Drug Reactions
Despite its effectiveness, not everyone is a suitable candidate for Differin gel. The medicated formulation is contraindicated in
- People allergic or hypersensitive to Adapalene or other ingredients of Differin.
- Individuals with a history of retinoid sensitivity.
Individuals with recent wounds or burns on the skin.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women or women planning to get pregnant should not use Differin gel. Additionally, it should not be used on children younger than twelve years of age. Differin gel does not have any known drug interactions because of its topical nature. Even then, use it before bedtime for safety reasons. If using it during the day, pair it with a strong sunscreen while wearing a protective covering.
How to buy Differin gel
Differin gel does not have a prescription status and thus can be obtained more readily than its prescription-based counterparts. You can buy Differin gel over the counter or in pharmacies that deal with acne medicines. Sometimes, GP offices with retail outlets are an ideal place to obtain Differin. Most importantly, you can order it online, which will enable you to get the medication at your doorsteps by helping you avail of online deals.
