Tetracycline derivative used to treat acne conditions. It is available in tablet and gel versions. Minocycline has a prescription status.
A Word on Minocycline
Minocycline is a second-generation tetracycline derivative and a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for a wide range of bacterial infections, especially penicillin-resistant strains.
Minocycline is especially effective for medication-resistant acne, with the AOCD ( American Osteopathic College of Dermatology ) recommending it among the most effective, easy-to-take acne treatments with the least side effects.
Working Mechanism
Minocycline binds to the bacterial ribosomes and inhibits protein synthesis to mitigate bacterium from the dermal surface. It is effective against a wide range of bacterial strains and has been recommended by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency for acne vulgaris.
Research has shown that minocycline has a faster onset of action than first-generation tetracyclines, along with being more fat-soluble, thus achieving higher levels in the sebum that help mitigate bacterium effectively.
Because of its superior properties, it shows significant improvement in acne symptoms within six weeks. The effect is significantly pronounced in participants with grade 1 acne, and the results are noticeable within two to three weeks.
Safety and Effectivity
In a study conducted to compare the efficacy of minocycline and lymecycline, eighty-six patients with moderate to severe acne were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind study and administered Minocycline 50 mg daily for twelve weeks, minocycline 100 mg for four weeks, followed by 50 mg for eight weeks and lymecycline 300 mg daily for twelve weeks.
Acne lesions and bacterial viability were evaluated during the screening visit and treatment visits. The results showed minocycline 100/50 mg was superior to lymecycline in reducing the number of papules satisfactorily. The microbial response to minocycline was found to be superior to lymecycline
Can everyone use Minocycline
Minocycline works best on individuals with moderate to severe acne vulgaris who do not respond satisfactorily to penicillin. Studies have shown oral minocycline to be an effective option for inflammatory acne affecting the trunk and facial regions.
That said, not everyone is an eligible candidate for minocycline use. It is contraindicated in
- Children less than twelve years of age
- People with liver complications
- Individuals allergic to minocycline
Additionally, people with myasthenia gravis are discouraged from using minocycline.Inform your physician about your allergy status and medical history before starting minocycline.
Side effects
Pigmentation is one of the side effects that occurs from long-term use of minocycline. Dermatologists recommend using Vitamin C derivatives with minocycline to reduce the risk of pigmentations.
Other than pigmentation, minocycline use can result in discolorations, gastrointestinal upset, itching, and swelling of the face and mouth in individuals allergic to its ingredients. Inform the physician if the side effects persist or intensify with minocycline use and get urgent medical attention.
